Honestly Honest

I read this post that Danielle wrote earlier this week and it got me thinking about blogging and how we portray ourselves.

I am no stranger to comparing myself to others.  I did it long before blogs and I'm sure I'll do it for the rest of my life.  Blogs are interesting because they allow us to put out only what we want, which usually ends up making ourselves look good.  That's not a comment on anyone in particular--I think it's human nature to only show our best selves, especially when you're facing so much potential criticism from the Internet.  Sadly this usually means that we end up comparing ourselves fruitlessly to a mirage, and as we all know, if we compare ourselves to perfection we will always fall short.

I'm learning more and more to not compare myself to anyone, because no one is perfect and I can only live life in the way that seems the most logical to me.

I like to think that my blog is pretty honest.  I'm pretty sure that if any of you met me in real life--as some of you have, and you can correct me if I'm wrong--you'd see that I'm pretty much the exact same person I portray on my blog.  I try not to hide my proud moments and my not-so-proud moments because my favorite blogs to read are the honest ones--the ones that remind me that we're all people, that we all have problems, and that it is our struggles that help define our lives.

That said, I decided to share some true honesty with you today, just to snap you back into reality if you had any delusions of my perfection (I have no delusions about this and assume you do not, but still, this will be fun, I promise).

---------------

1.  Rob and I hate folding laundry and haven't folded a load in probably around 4 months.  We get our clothes from here more frequently than our own dressers:

2. Rob and I are often too lazy to actually change a roll of toilet paper, so we end up sort of propping the new roll on top of the spent roll and call it good.

3. This is seriously what our bedroom looks like right now.  Note that my dog has more beds than I do.

4. Remember the rug I so provocatively posed with in this post?  Yeah, it's still there.

5. Our kitchen table looks like this.  Obviously we don't eat here.

6. My muffin top is all that, whole-grain, low-fat.

So there you go - total, unflinching honesty from yours truly.

This has to make it easier for the rest of you.  Just the pictures alone make me anxious.

  2. LOVED this. I think I might have to post the toilet paper roll thing too. You made me feel completely normal today.

I appreciate reading about honesty and realness and it's hard to want to portray myself as such when a lot of what I read is people talking about their "fabulous lives." And well, mine isn't always fabulous.

    Don't be anxious about your pictures. They rock. Mine would look exactly the same. (o;

  9. caitlin, this post was hilarious, and much-appreciated! i LOVE when bloggers are REAL about who they are, what they wear, where they live, etc. it's so refreshing to know that, like me, not everyone live a life of perfect luxury, and that laundry isn't always folded or put away!

  14. Haha...great post! At least you laundry looks to have made it out of the dryer! I just grab clothes out of the dryer...if I'm up earlier enough I hit the button for wrinkle release. Then the next weekend if there are still clothes in the dryer...the new batch of just washed clothes goes right in on top of them....I'm lazy when it comes to laundry!

  15. I like what you guys have going on in your room! It looks a lot like mine on any given day, except I can't have much on the floor because of my pets shedding ridiculous amounts. It's just all heaped on my bed and my desks. I WISH I was a cleaner person. Thankfully I still live with my mom who is slightly more OCD than I am about these things, so she keeps the rest of the house pretty tidy while I'm in school (and not wanting to clean, basically, at all)

Anyway, honesty is a HARD thing to blog about, and it's nice to put your best self forward online. Whenever I write posts that make me look vulnerable or not the person I want everyone to see me as, I get super anxious. It's kind of liberating too though. Thanks for sharing little bits of the you we don't always get to see:)

  21. Great post! I haven't really shared enough of my personal life on my blog (photos especially!). I fully intend to, but I've been telling myself to wait until I get cuter clothes, or when I have my place decorated the way I want, or until I move. The list goes on and it's definitely because I'm comparing myself to others. I really enjoyed your honest post and it's inspired me to do the same. I'll post it sometime next week and leave a comment so you can check it out if you want :) Right now I'm looking at a pile of dirty clothes and carefresh pet bedding on my floor from my pet skunk. It's pretty gross in here.
