The Story So Far

So we are officially halfway through the move...the driving part, anyway.

On Saturday morning we did a absolutely marathon run of cleaning.  We threw away every godforsaken thing we own, I swear.  At one point I asked Rob if we had any more room in the trailer, and his reply was, "Oh, we ran out of room a long time ago, but I'm still finding room."  We had to leave behind our hamper, a rug, kitchen chairs, and a number of other items, but it was all worth it for the sake of ease. Miraculously we managed to get out of the house at around 10:15 and how this happened, I will never be able to explain. It was all so fast and so frantic that I didn't really have much time to feel sad at our abrupt departure and newly empty house.  I did, however, get a chance to take a picture of our empty house as well as the house in which our first apartment was.

Rob and Amie drove in the Jeep with the trailer ahead of me and I drove in my little Corolla.  The 11.5-hour drive really wasn't too bad, maybe because I expected it to be extremely horrific.

On the first night we found ourselves in Carlisle, Pennsylvania...exhausted and hungry but more or less okay.  I literally snacked on chips, cookies and M&Ms all day so I felt pretty awful.

Today we made it from Pennsylvania to Indianapolis.  I finally got to ride the Chang (translation: eat at P.F. Chang's) which made me quite happy, and now we're chilling in the hotel, having drinks and giving ourselves temporary tattoos.

We have two more days of traveling ahead of us so hopefully we'll make it without any breakdowns or random acts of violence toward one another.

Want to know something funny? Though this has been a really stressful venture I feel closer than ever to my Robbie.  I knew this anyway but I really have faith that we can weather any storm.

I hope you're all doing fabulously and thank you x1000 for all of your well wishes and support.

  3. Even though I know it's a very stressful time and move etc etc etc (especially because I'm doing the exact same thing right now except across a suburb not a country haha, and its driving me crazy) I am SO JEALOUS of your road trip.

11.5 hours driving through states? Just turning up in Pennsylvania? I die. It sounds like my dream.

I know you travel a lot for work so if that continues, more travel pics- more, more! :-D

Glad everything's going okay, best wishes for the rest of the trip! x

    1. I've just looked at that and wondered how much of it makes any sense outside of the UK... I'm sure you get the gist :)

  7. i'm glad you made such good (and quick) progress, and i hope you have a safe trip! also, i couldn't help but cringe a little when i read, "pennsylvania." it was my absolute hell on earth, adn i'd never live there again unless i was in prison and then of course i wouldn't have a choice.

  10. When I moved this past fall, my boyfriend and I stuffed anything we could fit around my dog and her bed in the back of the station wagon and took off. We pretty much had nothing. Our first few meals were eaten on the floor. I realized after we unpacked that the only shoes I brought with me were the flip flops on my feet. Not so convenient when you live in the Vermont wilderness! It was crazy, but also SO liberating!

Can't wait to see more of your new home :)

  11. I forgot everything you said after I read "I finally got to ride the Chang." And now I think I might drive to Phoenix for lunch before work. =P
I'm so happy for you Caitlin! I think it obviously says a lot that you're seeing this as a bond-strengthener and not letting it get to you. You go girl!
Reading this makes me so, so excited to leave for our big trip. I can't wait to take off on that long drive and just enjoy it all!!

  14. I haven't stopped and read a blog post all. day. but I did stop and read this one and I LOVED IT!!! I know how you feel. Jen and I have done the "express move" a few times, mainly due to seasonal jobs. One time we had our own trailer, so we did have to lighten our load and throw a LOT out. But I really love driving, and any sort of road trip, especially with Jen and especially when a stop or two is involved. Late night gas station bathroom stops? Oh, yes! ;)

  15. you guys are killin it! i'm impressed already! driving that far is no fun, my aunt loves to do the drive from az to ny straight(36hrs) and its pretty intense. there will for sure be some boring parts of your trip...but my best trip advice is to turn up your music loud, sing at the top of your lungs, and car dance your way to the next stop! whenever i used to drive the 17hrs from humboldt to phoenix by myself that is the only thing that got me through...and if its just you in the car you can go all out. ;) plus, you'll provide quality entertainment for all the people driving by you. can't wait for you to be closer!! you know the drill: safe and happy travels! may the force be with you. nanu nanu.

  16. Sending "good luck" thoughts your way so everything goes just as planned! Long stretches of driving can make your body sore so remember to run and jump and stretch when you can! You guys are awesome!

  19. It looks like you two are off to a good start! I love the feeling of purging a tonne of shit. I'm a bit obsessive about it and it makes Jesse kind of pissy at times. I'm looking forward to seeing you guys settled into your new home. I know I said it before but that view is amazing (ha! as if you don't know that). Safe travels my friend. ♥
