A Thought for Your Tuesday

Tuesday is such a beige day, am I right? Not quite Monday, not yet halfway through the week, nowhere close to Friday or Saturday.

Anyway I thought I'd share a thought with you on this beige-ass day that made me stop and think. I believe that this quote sort of sums up all of my issues with insecurity.

"The reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind-the-scenes with everyone else's highlight reel."
- Steven Furtick

In the interests of linking properly, I originally found this quote through Sarah's blog, who found it on this blog.

I hope you all have a great Beigesday friends!

Our Easter Weekend

So we've made it through our first holiday away from home (at least as adults...we spent many holidays away from home during the college/army days).  I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a little sad being away from home, but I'm with Robbie and he's my home, so I can't complain.

Rob's schedule, as you know if you watched my vlog, is such that he works Sunday-Thursday, 9am-6pm, and has Friday and Saturday off.  This schedule will hold until he gets called out to a fire, at which point he can be called out for at most two weeks at a time.  It was nice having him home again on Friday and Saturday, but of course went by far too quickly. On Friday I worked while he spent some quality time with Le Chien (yeah, I'm wordly), and for the first time we had margaritas on the patio together which was just lovely. On Saturday we took a quickie trip to the ABQ to pick Rob up some new running shoes.  I was so excited when Rob suggested we get food and when he agreed to P.F. Chang's.  I'm a cheap date.

On Sunday Rob had to shuffle off to work and I had the day to myself, which actually has been pretty neat.  I ate a Cadbury Egg for breakfast and also made Rob one kick-ass Easter basket.  When he came home he told me that he had seen a coworker with Easter candy, and thought to himself, "I really hope Caitlin makes me an Easter basket.  I bet she did." What can I say, the man knows me well.

While Robbie was at work on Easter, I had a couple of drinks and totally "zenned out," as the kids say, on my patio.  It was a beautiful day, 63 or so with a slight breeze, and I was just really, really, really happy, sitting there in the sunshine, listening to music and thinking about how great my life is.  I know it's sappy but...I don't know. It was just really awesome and was exactly what I needed.

That evening we ate breakfast sandwiches with egg, bacon and pepper jack for dinner.  I mean come on, isn't that the perfect Easter dinner?  Eggs and pig meat?  Anyone?

So that was our weekend in a nutshell.  Pretty mellow but that's just how I like it.

Finally, Instagram is now for Android users too, eh? WELL THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD I GUESS. Kidding, I loved my Android, I just like my iPhone better because it runs on the hopes and dreams of children and the sadness crystals really do wonders for the processing speed. Anyway, if you like pictures of my hot-ass husband, my cute-ass dog, the view from our patio, alcohol, and gluten-free food, my Instagram username is tomakelovestay.

On Letting the Right One In

Up until the last few years or so, I seemed to be constantly drawn to people who would bring me down.

When you suffer from anxiety and/or depression, friendship can be both a wonderful and yet very frustrating thing.  Actually scratch that, I'm pretty sure even if you are anxious or depressed friendship can be wonderful and frustrating.  Any activity that has you developing a relationship with a fellow imperfect human being is usually going to end up pretty messy.

A friend (see what I did there?) and I were talking about people that don't seem to be interested in having friends so much as keeping them.  I've had a lot of experience with these people it seems.  These are the people who blow you off, usually via text or other non-confrontational method I find, but yet later will still send you baffling signals about how close of friends you apparently are.  I constantly doubt myself all on my own and have sadly spent far too much time trying to decipher what my friendship means to this type of person.

I also seem to meet a lot of people who are defined by their baggage.  Since I was a kid I was drawn to people who needed me, the obvious problem being that when I needed them they were simply incapable of being there.  As you all know well, I have plenty of baggage myself and work best in mutual, caring friendships.

Another person I come into contact with on a somewhat regular basis are downright toxic people.  I know a few friends who pollute my Facebook feed (it's always Facebook) with toxicity, and depending on who the person is it causes me stress to no end.  I'm constantly fearing a confrontation with these people and worry for hours over what that confrontation will consist of.  It isn't uncommon for me to allow these people and their actions to interfere with my entire day.  And because I'm far too apologetic and insecure, I'm too scared to delete or block them for fear of harassment and retribution.

I probably haven't always been the best friend in the world, but I know that I'm a good person and I've always tried to be the best friend I can.  I don't deserve to be bogged down by people who make themselves happy simply by dragging others down.  A personal goal of mine is to become better at determining those friendships that enrich my life rather than cause me undue stress and anxiety. I don't have time for that shit.

Those of you who are my real friends can come with me to P.F. Chang's!

Though this sounds like a bit of a downer post, thinking about those not-so-positive forces in my life reminds me of those friends, online and off, that do enrich my life.  You know who you are, and I love you for it. I hope I return your friendly awesomeness to at least a certain degree.

Have a great week, all!

Thoughts on My First Week as a "Housewife"

Robbie and I have always had a pretty egalitarian agreement when it comes to housework.  We've lived together for close to four years, and during most of that time--until now, in fact--I was the only one working. As a result, cleaning the house, doing the dishes, cooking dinner, and walking the dog automatically fell to Rob.  He never complained or whined, partially because he's fabulous but also because it made sense that he'd do these things while I was working and paying our bills.

Even during last summer, when he had a research assistant job, I was working long hours and if he came home early enough he'd still make dinner and get a lot of the chores done.

For my part, I have always felt anxious about housework, especially if Rob's doing it.  It's not like I think that housework is solely my responsibility as a bona fide lady--because it isn't--but I've always had a sneaking suspicion that Rob didn't think our arrangement was fair.  I was terrified that it actually wasn't fair and that I was unknowingly taking advantage of his awesomeness.  Despite the fact that he never questioned the arrangement and despite the fact that I paid all the bills, I was still terrified that I was simply a terrible wife.

For the record I'm not sure where the guilt comes from; my parents didn't typically adhere to traditional gender roles and neither Rob nor I have ever put much stock in them. My best guess is that it simply stems from one of my greatest talents, and that is feeling guilty for shit I don't need to feel guilty for. I also wanted to point out that I've never believed that women who either chose to work or chose to be housewives and stay at home moms were anti-feminist; I've always strongly believed that feminism is about having the choice to do whatever the hell you want to do.  I've only ever bestowed the "bad wife" judgement upon myself and no other.

Anyway before Rob started working we talked about how things would change.  For the foreseeable future I'll be working from home, which means by default housework will fall to me.  I was really nervous at first because, and this has taken me awhile to admit and accept, I am super lazy.  Before Rob started working a task like washing dishes was almost physically painful for me.

But I've been a sort-of "housewife" for five days now, and I have to say that I kind of like it.

In between working--which takes up a lot of my time for obvious reasons--I've been cleaning, walking and feeding Cypress, going shopping, and doing whatever miscellaneous errands may need doing. As silly as it is to admit I like when Rob gets home and the house is clean and dinner is almost ready, not because I'm a woman and it's my duty, but because I just like having the ability to keep the house organized on top of getting my normal work done.  I like that yesterday I decided to clean our sheets and make the bed on a work break, and that Rob was so excited when he got home and saw that I'd done it. I suppose I like seeing the concrete benefit of the work I do around the house during the day, since the benefits that come from doing my job and paying bills are often external and less tangible, if that makes any sense at all.

I'm sure you can guess that I'm not nearly as hard on Rob as I was on myself when it was just me working.  When he comes home he helps with dinner and I know he will continue to do so on weekends, but I don't give him the same side-eye I gave myself if he sits on the couch for a half-second with the dog before jumping up to wash a dish I just used.

I guess my point is that this whole process is helping me to see the give and take of marriage and how important it is to view marriage as a partnership.  At this point I'm really hoping that I will keep up with writing about this as my role in our mini-family morphs and changes with Rob's employment choice, since his new job is such that it will likely dictate most of what I do in the coming years.

I wish you all a happy Friday and a lovely weekend!

Rob's First Day of Work

By the time most of you read this my husband will have started his first day of work at his new job.

Thinking about boobs or fried chicken or some shit.

This may seem like a goofy thing to write about but my pride for my husband knows no bounds, be they common courtesy or interest on the part of the person I'm talking to.

I'm so excited for Robbie to start this new chapter.  I know he'll do a great job, as he does with everything he puts his mind to.  It'll be difficult at times, but as Rob's dad said of us at our rehearsal dinner, we have never been a couple who does things the easy way.

Robbie, I love you so much and I am so, so proud of you.  Good luck on your pack test today.

Happy April, everyone!
